CONCUSSION & MANAGING HEAD INJURIES
INTRODUCTION
The AFL have released guidelines around concussion and the protocols and rules that the BJFNC will be following if a concussion occurs.
The Broadford Junior Football Netball Club will be following these processes in determining concussion on the field and the process after to ensure all children are safe and properly cared for.
ABOUT THE BJFNC’S CONCUSSION PROTOCOL
The BJFNC Injury Protocol for 2024 will be as follows:
The Club trainers will follow the AFL protocol and use the Headcheck App which is also available and free for parents and others.
The BJFNC will complete a report on every injury that they are made aware of.
When the injury is a head knock, a Match Day Head Injury Assessment Tool and Referral Form will be completed.
The BJFNC will make a phone call to the parents of the injured player in the week following the match to follow up on the injury.
Parents and players should seek professional medical advice to determine the appropriate time to return to play. (The earliest a player may return to the field is 21 days following a concussion)
The AFL’s ‘Management of Sport-Related Concussion in Australian Football’ (March 2024) states that players are required to not resume training or playing for a minimum of 21 days after a head injury has been sustained and a concussion diagnosed. It also states that any concussed player must not be allowed to return to competitive contact sport (including full contact training sessions) clearance before having a medical clearance.
